Did you know? Burn injuries are categorized as first, second, and third degree burns. First Degree Burns affect the epidermis (outer layer of skin). These types of burns irritate the skin and cause redness. An example of a first degree burn would be mild sunburn. Second Degree Burns affect the dermis (layer below the epidermis). These types of burns cause the skin to turn pink and blister. The burned area may also be moist. While these burns are painful, they usually heal within two weeks time. An example of a second degree burn would be touching a frying pan. Third Degree Burns affect all the layers of skin and the tissue beneath. These burns are usually white or black in color and cause permanent scarring. Third degree burns are the most harmful and require the longest period of recovery. Sometimes, a severe third degree burn can be fatal. An example of a third degree burn would be direct bodily exposure to fire or immersion in hot water.
